The time I spent working at Cisco made a lasting impression on me. It felt and behaved very differently from other organisations I have experienced, and that one big difference was the active discouragement of organisational politics. The then CEO, John T. Chambers, strongly believed that a politically charged environment could destroy an organisation, and he made it his mission to ensure that Cisco staff did not succumb to it.
Based on my experience, here are my 5 tips for leaders to create a no-politics workplace culture/environment.
1. Positively promote and live a no politics culture
2. Ensure transparent decision making
3. Deal with office gossip straight away
4. Embed a culture of clear, empathetic feedback
5. Set KPIs for collaboration and support
