The saying “change is the only constant in [business] life” is something we have all heard. And in most organisations where we have consulted this is a truism. The list of different types of organisational change is huge and ranges from high-level strategic change, people-centric organisational change to unplanned and remedial change.
As stated at the beginning of this series the issue that most organisations face is how to embed the change and make it endure. Typically, if the majority of change in organisations were viewed through the lens of Kurt Lewin’s change model, it could be argued that one, two or even all three of the stages, of ‘unfreeze’, ‘change’, and ‘refreeze’ were not addressed or completed effectively.
Our simple advice to those who want to make change work is to follow these 5 steps:
1. Be courageous – grasp the opportunity and be ambitious
2. Build a coalition of willing and not so willing
3. Create and maintain momentum
4. Communicate, communicate, communicate
5. Anchor the change into the existing or revised culture
